Jesus is the question. Let me explain.
In the Garden of Eden, after the man and the woman betray God and try to displace him as their Creator, they become ashamed of their nakedness. They had been transparent to each other and to God, but upon their transgression they become self-conscious about their motives, and so they cover up their intimate parts. Then they go hide behind trees. They do not want to be seen for who they are, so they put up defenses, separate from each other, turn their home into a fortress, and shy away from God’s view. They are lost to themselves, isolated and afraid.
Their Creator will not leave them in this state. He comes to find them, and as he seeks them he does something really surprising: He asks a question.
In this book I have dared to take Jesus’ questions seriously.
Among Jesus’ questions that author Leonard DeLorenzo examines:
Do you want to be healed?
Who do the crowds say that I am?
Why do you call me good?
Whom do you seek?
Leonard DeLorenzo
I have learned that his questions are never just when they seem.
Here is a word of warning: If you want to remain comfortable, do not let Jesus ask you questions. If you take these questions seriously, you will become just like those whom we hear about in the gospels, whose commonplace ways of thinking were overturned. His questions reveal the hidden secrets of people’s hearts, and reset the cozy encounter they thought they would have with him.
Jesus’ question is not “Are you sick?” or “Are you suffering?” but “Do you want to be healed?” Jesus isn’t asking for help with the diagnosis; he already knows. What matters to Jesus is whether or not the man wants to be healed.
In this thought-provoking work, Leonard DeLorenzo brings insight, wisdom, and clarity to the questions that the Son of God puts to all of us. While one could read this relatively short book fairly quickly, as is the case with many spiritual works it is intended to make us think and to draw us into prayer and contemplation. I know that I will return to this book regularly, both for my ministry and for my own personal spiritual growth. I highly recommend A God Who Questions.

In A God Who QuestionsLeonard DeLorenzo does something so original it is almost subversive: he examines the questions Christ Jesus asks of us through the Gospel, and invites us to feel challenged while we explore the answers. This is at once a daunting and inviting book — a chance to consider the often-overlooked nuances to what Jesus is saying to us throughout the ages, but most especially and compellingly in our present day. This is a rich collection of Christian considerations that may well be vital to the faith in the 21st Century.

“Dr. Delorenzo provides a great tool to help us encounter the God that questions. Each chapter is perfectly suited to bring to one's time of prayer, and is a great aid in helping us hear the questions God asks us. The questions make the scriptures come alive as a living text through which the Word of God addresses us personally, so as to draw us more deeply into an encounter with Him.”
— Fr. Harrison Ayre, co-host of Clerically Speaking
“In A God Who Questions, Dr. Leonard DeLorenzo explores some of Jesus' questions, showing us how a fascinating dynamic of dialogue in our prayer lives can draw us further into the mystery of our union with God.”
