The Solar Panel

Electrify your models with the powerful solar panel included in the kit. As soon as enough light energy strikes the solar panel, the motor will turn and your model will start moving. The solar panel acts as a photovoltaic system, converting light energy into electric current. It functions off of direct sunlight or light from a high wattage light bulb, similar to one you'd find in a desk lamp or flashlight.

The Models

By building five awesome models and conducting experiments with them, kids will learn how solar cells transform light into electrical energy, and how motors and mechanical devices can optimize the work done by this energy. All models include two different configurations: one using the solar panel and one using rechargeable batteries (which can be charged using the battery compartment included in the kit). This way, the models can operate in all lighting conditions.

The Manual

The 48-page manual includes step-by-step visual instructions to build the five models featured in the kit, in addition to a wealth of information about the science of solar power and solar technology. Ten experiments enhance the educational content, providing users with hands-on projects to dive deeper into the ways that solar energy is used in everyday life as well as how we might harness this energy to accomplish even more in the future.

Mastering Inclines

Using the Solar Bug model, kids will learn how the position of a gear affects the movement of the model. Depending on where the gear is placed on the bug's leg, rotational movement is converted to longitudinal movement, allowing the bug to walk instead of roll.

Lightweight is Best for Harnessing Solar Power

After constructing the Solar Rover model, kids can experiment to determine how much weight it can carry. Their results will help them understand why solar vehicles are constructed to be as lightweight as possible for maximum efficiency.

Experimental Series

Using the Solar Helicopter model, kids will experiment to see how much force the rotors exert. By repeating the experiment several times and recording and averaging the results, they are able to draw a more well-rounded conclusion.

Optimizing Performance

How do the models move when under a flashlight as opposed to direct sunlight? What happens when part of the solar panel is covered, either by shade or by an object? Experiments in the manual encourage kids to put their models to the test in a variety of different environments.
