Paper Stencil Method
Creating Your Stencil
Using a pencil, draw an image on a sheet of Bienfang Graphics 360 Marker Paper. Then, using a utility knife, cut the drawn image out, creating a paper stencil. Keep in mind the fundamental rule of any cut stencil: any shape can easily be cut into a stencil, but a shape within another shape falls out.
Preparing to Print
Position the paper stencil under your screen and tape the perimeter of the frame to cover any mesh not covered by the paper stencil. If printing on fabric, cut a piece of thick paper, cardboard, or foam board to slide inside the shirt to keep ink from bleeding onto the other side when printing.
Printing Your Image
Pulling the squeegee is the heart of the craft of screen printing. The speed of your pull, squeegee angle, pressure, and "ink wrangling" are some of the core skills for a good print. Before printing, it is always wise to do a "test print" on scrap paper or fabric. This will help to recognize and remedy any issues before any legitimate printing.
The Big Reveal
Carefully lift the screen and experience the miracle of screen printing.
All Speedball screen printing inks are water-based and safe to wash down the drain. Soap and water will easily wash up excess ink.
Drawing Fluid & Screen Filler Method
Draw Your Image
Anything drawn with drawing fluid will become the printed image, so you may take advantage of the opportunity for painterly lines in your drawing. You can sketch your image out on paper first, or lightly draw directly onto the screen.
Coat Your Screen
The purpose of screen filler is to coat all the areas of the screen which you do not want to print. If you'd like a little extra texture around the outside of your image, you can intentionally NOT coat the screen perfectly with screen filler or dry brush some of the edges for a more organic and painterly textured border when you print
Washing Out Your Screen
Once the screen filler is completely dry, rinse the front and back of the screen. During this step, the blue drawing fluid will begin to wash away revealing the the painted stencil.
Creating Your Print
The time has come! After all the hard work, it's time to see your project come to life. Place ink at the top of the screen and pull your squeegee evenly to create your print.
When you're finished with your project, the screen can be reclaimed using Speedball Speed Clean.
