Corriedale is the result of cross-breeding Merino and Lincoln sheep in order to better fit the New Zealand environment. The Corriedale breed is popular among fiber artists and crafters of all kinds. While it has a higher micron count than Merino, which tends to make it not as soft, it still holds many properties of merino with added durability.
With significant loft and distinctive crimp, Corriedale wool is the optimal wool choice for sweaters, socks, blankets, and other household textiles.
Renewable: Just like humans need a haircut, every year sheep need to be sheared for their health and we have worked to ensure they are not harmed in the harvesting of wool.
Safe for Environment: If it is time to dispose of your project wool naturally decomposes in soil over time, releasing valuable nutrients back into the earth, acting like a natural fertilizer.
Fiber Length – Corriedale wool fibers are classified as long staple length (between 3 – 5 inches) making it a great wool for advanced and beginner spinners.
Fineness – The Corriedale fibers is medium grade fineness (27 – 33) but still very soft to the touch relative to other breeds of sheep.
Natural Crimp – Corriedale has a very defined crimp (great for spinning into yarn). It is more difficult to spin fine, but it makes a perfectly bouncy DK or heavier weight yarn.
Needle Felting & Wet Felting
Corriedale is perfect for needle felting because of the diameter of the wool fibers and the very springy texture. These characteristics make it easy for the felting needle to catch on the wool fibers. Many crafters prefer Corriedale as their go-to core felting wool rather than merino or lesser-known breeds.
While it’s perfect for needle felting crafters also use it for wet felting projects, however, it is best blended with merino or another faster felter breed for wet felting projects. Adding Corriedale to a wet felting project slows the felting process which gives you more control over the final piece, but it will also make the piece a tad more bulky in most cases.
Spinning
Favored by spinners, Corriedale wool is medium-fine with good softness and is somewhat between medium wool and long wool.
Corriedale is a popular beginner spinner wool fiber due to its fiber length and strength. Our Corriedale wool has been cleaned and processed into a continuous length to ensure the fibers are all aligned.
Arm or Hand Knitting
Arm knitting is an easy and popular approach for beginners. For this technique, needles are not necessary! Also called arm weaving, or arm crocheting, this technique is often used for larger-scale projects such as a blanket, rugs, scarves, or pillows.
Corriedale works well for these projects due to its ability to grip and durability. When weaving it is less likely to slip around or become loose.
This Corriedale wool is thoroughly washed, combed and carded making it ready for use upon delivery. The wool fibers are aligned, easy to work with and are free of any harsh animal smells or vegetable matter.
