Product description
Premium Grade Undyed Cheviot Wool Roving Top
Cheviot is a lovely and popular wool that is a wonderful all-purpose fiber loved by spinners, weavers, felters, knitters and crocheters around the world. This is premium grade, fine and softer than most other cheviot wools. Cruelty-free sourced, this reliable multipurpose wool is a pleasure to spin, knit, crochet, weave, felt, or use for filling purposes.
The best feature about Cheviot wool is resilience & durability making it the optimal wool choice for sweaters, socks, blankets and other household textiles. It has a very well-defined crimp, and it makes a wonderfully bouncy DK or heavier weight yarn.
Knitters, weavers and crocheters will love it for its grippy-ness and ease of drafting. Colorwork and macrame weaving done with Cheviot won’t slip around or become loose.
The Cheviot wool is famous for its crimp and resilience. The helical crimp gives the wool a strong structure and integrity as the surfaces bend and shift to prevent wear. This is what gives the wool its resilience and protects the cheviot sheep from snow, rain and cold. With its durability and a staple length of 3-5 inches, the cheviot wool is ideal for knit projects like sweaters, socks, blankets, wall hangings, tapestries, rugs and more.
Renewable: Just like humans need a haircut, every year merino sheep need to be sheared for their health and we have worked to ensure they are not harmed in the harvesting of wool
Safe for Environment: If it is time to dispose of your project wool naturally decomposes in soil over time, releasing valuable nutrients back into the earth, acting like a natural fertilizer
Fiber Length - Cheviot wool fibers are naturally long and strong. This is important because if the garment is made of too many short fibers it is prone to rip, tear and wear faster
Helical or DNA-type Crimp - The crimp is the way in which the wool fibers grow and intertwine with each other. The cheviot’s helical fibers are springy and strong, able to withstand pressure and wear
Needle Felting & Wet Felting
Needle felting is a process that involves sticking a needle repeatedly to shape and sculpt a piece of wool into a desired shape or form. Cheviot wool can be fine to coarse, and while not as soft as Corriedale and Merino, it has a very strong and durable structure which is ideal for larger felting projects or as a felting base to build upon.
Wet felting is a more extensive process and involves combining water and soap to create a piece of fabric. It is often used to create two-dimensional artwork. Other steps are involved using heat, moisture, and changing ph levels.
Spinning
Cheviot Wool is great for spinning or both wheel and drop spindle, for beginners and advanced spinners alike. It is especially popular among hand spinners as the wool fibers have a great draft, in particular when it’s combed. Once the cheviot wool is spun into yarn it is commonly used for outwear and household items that receive a lot of use. Our cheviot wool takes dye well and is perfect as a filling material.
Arm or Hand Knitting
Arm knitting is an easy and popular approach for beginners. For this technique, needles are not necessary! Also called arm weaving, or arm crocheting, this technique is often used for larger-scale projects such as a blanket, rugs, scarves or pillows. When you are knitting with your arms a larger scale yarn or roving is needed. Because of its resilient quality, our cheviot wool makes for the perfect blanket arm-knitting project
This Cheviot wool is thoroughly washed, combed, and carded making it ready for use upon delivery. The wool fibers are aligned, easy to work with, and are free of any harsh animal smells or vegetable matter.
