Tom Lichtenheld, Illustrator of Stick and Stone: Best Friends Forever!, Shares a Fun Backstory
At the beginning of a book project, I like to start sketching with no connection to specific scenes, just to let my mind and pencil wander. Because most of this story happens in the woods, I started playing with compositions in woodland settings.
A few unused tight sketches for the cover. (Not sure why I’m fixated on the Moai sculptures of Papa Nui. Someday I’ll get one into a book!)
I had a good time playing with the idea of Stick and Stone as hikers.
Still playing, I figured Stone would want to go some places that had incredible stones.
Every scene can be visualized more than one way, so I play with variations, then pick the best one.
Rough sketches are done small, quick and loose so I can explore options.
