Oswald Chambers’ Life and Legacy 1874–1917
Oswald Chambers was born in Scotland and spent much of his boyhood there. His ministry of teaching and preaching took him for a time to the United States and Japan. The last six years of his life were spent as principal of the Bible Training College in London and as a chaplain to the Allied troops in Egypt during World War l. After his death, the books which bear his name were compiled by his wife, Biddy, from her own verbatim shorthand notes of his talks.
Chambers’ wife compiled a book of readings with one selection for every day of the year from Oswald’s lectures and talks. For the title, she selected the guiding principle for Oswald Chambers’ life: My Utmost for His Highest.
The book was published in 1927 in England and in 1935 in the United States. It has since become the best-selling devotional book of all time.
