From the Publisher
Fall 2018, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is for the first time consecrating virtually all its galleries to single artists, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele
Jean-Michel Basquiat includes the most diverse and unorthodox supports used by the artist: canvas, paper, hoardings, doors, planks, objects, silkscreens, and photocopies, among others.
His first studio was the street, inspiring a language that had never before been articulated. Before he was 20, he was first a poet as part of SAMO, expressing terse and sometimes spiteful maxims on buildings. He was also a musician playing some of New York’s most frenzied spaces at the end of the 70s. His actions placed him in the most influential circles, gradually making him the first African-American artist to really be accepted visually and symbolically in the world of Western art.
Thirty years after his death, Basquiat’s works are attracting maximum attention
In both the art trade and auctions, his works have brought record-breaking prices. He's become a focus for art historians, spotlighting his artistic practice and his unmistakable aesthetic.
Basquiat lies at the intersection of three major axes that structure the Collection: the subjective expression of the artist, a Pop sensibility, and a connection with music and sound. This exhibition is part of a continual search for dialogue between current creation and striking works from the modern period.
An ensemble of more than 120 works by Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Many of his works presented have never before been displayed.
The thirtieth anniversary of his death (1988–2018), is a perfect time for his tribute.
Basquiat absorbed everything, mixing the lessons of the street with a repertoire of images, heroes, and symbols from a wide range of cultures.
