Standard, unformulated curcumin is less than 1% bioavailable. Curcumin absorption is diminished at several stages in the digestive process. First, it is degraded by stomach acid, then rapidly metabolized into less active forms by liver enzymes and is easily excreted in the kidneys. Not only does little curcumin reach the bloodstream, but the half-life of standard curcumin (the time taken to halve its concentration in the body) is less than 1 minute! Even piperine-based (black pepper) delivery systems, which aid the amount absorbed, extends half-life by only a few minutes, severely limiting the effects. Furthermore, piperine works by suppressing liver detoxification which, long-term, may not be beneficial for the safe removal of toxins, medications and excess hormones in the body. In contrast, Longvida delivers curcumin with a 7-hour half-life, and can be taken safely long-term, without compromising other vital functions.
