The aged former king is sitting in the palace and looking out at the distant mountains. He seems to be reminiscing on his glorious days. The mountains are covered with white snow just as the old king is with his gray hair. He can sit back and spend the rest of his life in peace but he still has some regrets. We do not know if he is looking back on what could have been or would have been done, or having a remorse on shameful things that happened in the past. He appears to be living a mellow life but no one knows what is going on in his mind. The former king is to live the rest of his life peacefully. He has accumulated wisdom and experiences but he does not involve himself in the state affairs anymore. Any king ought to know when to retire those who retire at the right time are bestowed with significant benefits, honor and peaceful rest. Even the king of jungle tigers looks for a shelter to rest in when it ages.
17. PROCESSION TO TEMPORARY PALACE
It is a huge procession of the king traveling to another palace. The majestic procession of the officials and the trumpeters marching together displays the great power of the kingship to the subjects. In this journey of temporarily leaving the main palace to travel to another palace, the king has achieved his political objectives of observing the commoners’ lives and patrolling the local regions, as well as strengthening his royal authority. The wise king does not limit his presence only to within the palace but regularly mobilizes a large number of people and significant amount of money to provide interesting sights for his subjects, and also to proclaim his reign. This is such a remarkable political gesture, even by the modern standards.
36. PALACE ATTENDANTS ON NIGHT WATCH
“Soonra” is keeping a night vigil where the court ladies and eunuchs walk through the hallways of the palace quarters holding lanterns. Soonra was carried out to prevent theft and fire and it was necessary to ensure that the same watching practice was carried out at night as well as during the day. The royal families could sleep comfortably at night knowing that they were well-protected. Even a single mistake could endanger the safety of the royal family. The palace structures were mostly built with wood so they were vulnerable to fire; once they caught fire, it was very difficult to put it out. Also, the royal family had to be careful of the dangers posed by the opposition and assassins sneaking in as the palace was a large place.
