From the Introduction
Lassen is the southernmost of the famed Cascade volcanoes, which includes peaks that thrust up more than 14,000 feet, including Mount Shasta and Mount Rainier. The Cascades are part of the “Ring of Fire,” a girdle of seismic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean. From Malaysia to Alaska to the Andes, tectonic plates, pieces of the fractured shell of the planet, bump and slide and surrender to one another in wrenching cataclysms. Every significant geologic feature within the park, even the gentlest, was born of the movements of these plates. Look around: The peaks you see are all volcanic—cinder cones, shield volcanos, plug domes, the remains of a composite volcano that has long since collapsed. These days, Lassen slumbers. This deep sleep, whether permanent or temporary, offers the hiker a unique opportunity to wander among the mysteries and wonders of the volcanism that has shaped Northern California and the rest of Cascadia.
