Spanish moss is an epiphytic flowering plant belonging to the Tillandsia genus of bromeliads (air plants) that often grows upon large trees in tropical and subtropical climates. Without roots, it absorbs nutrients and water through its own leaves from the air and rainfall. It clings to tree branches but rarely kills them.
