Heat-Activated Fabric Dressing

Meltable waterproofing wax for fabrics needing a breathable, flexible barrier and ideal for treating larger surface areas.

This dressing is applied when melted, allowing the wax to fully saturate canvas fibers for a durable and long-lasting protective finish. This wax cures to a matte finish, making it the best option for achieving a factory-waxed appearance that offers outstanding protection when applied to untreated canvas fabrics as well as all types of waxed canvas, oiled fabrics, and tincloth.

Instructions For How To Apply Heat-Activated Fabric Dressing

Ideal for waterproofing unwaxed materials, but this dressing is also a great way to reinvigorate factory-waxed and oiled fabrics. Applies easily when melted with a natural-bristle brush or soft lint-free cloth. For best results, use only on natural fiber (cotton, hemp, etc.) canvas and fabrics or poly-blended materials with at least 60% natural fiber content.

How To Apply Otter Wax Heat-Activated Fabric Dressing To Canvas And Fabric For Best Waterproofing

Step 1.

Gather your supplies. You'll need your canvas or fabric garment, a heating element, a pan with 1.5" of water, and a lint-free cotton cloth. Optional items include a medium-bristle brush, and a wooden Smoothing Tool.

Step 2.

Allow the tin to simmer in the hot water until wax begins to melt. You can adjust temperature up to melt the wax faster, however make sure that you turn the heat back down as soon as it melts.

Step 3.

Dip a lint-free cotton cloth into the Fabric Dressing and allow excess wax to drip back into tin. Make sure that your garment is clean and free of any dirt or dust, as this can be difficult to remedy once the wax has been applied.

Step 4.

With your clean garment laid out completely flat, begin applying Fabric Dressing. Apply to 6"x6" sections of fabric at a time before moving onto the next area.

Step 5.

Make sure that enough wax is being applied. You're on the right track when the surface of the canvas looks shiny and smooth.

Step 6.

Use your fingers, a wood Smoothing Tool or similar instrument to apply pressure and press any surface wax into the fabric. This helps remove any white clumps of wax and creates an even waterproof seal.

Step 7.

Use the edges of the wood Smoothing Tool to remove any excess wax from difficult areas such as seams and creases. Use a blow dryer or heat gun set to low to soften wax to a more spreadable consistency.

Step 8.

Allow your newly waxed item to hang in a warm, dry place for about 24~72 hours. Over time, any remaining tack will subside as the oils evaporate leaving the wax binded with the fabric.
