Chapter 2: Gain Awareness
I affectionately call this chapter “The chapter that everyone really, really needs to read, but doesn’t want to read!” Here we talk about the core of learning to yell less: tracking your triggers. Ugh. I know. “Tracking triggers” sounds like work; that’s because it is work. And it sounds time-consuming. That’s because it is time-consuming. But you know what else it is? An absolutely powerful and necessary tool. Learning about my triggers quickly gave me concrete insights and ideas on how to start successfully managing my desire to yell. From tracking, I taught myself how to master my triggers instead of letting them master me. Did learning about my triggers make me uncomfortable? Absolutely. Acknowledging that I had a big, ugly deficiency in the parenting bucket isn’t exactly something that I would like to do every day, for this realization rocked me to the core. But tracking triggers, well, this rocked me to the core in a whole new way because what I learned made my life quieter, calmer, happier, and easier, too!
Day 6: Start Tracking Triggers
Day 7: Be Honest with Yourself
Day 8: Note Physical Symptoms of a Growing Yell
Day 9: Label Your Triggers
Cool: Paint your nails—toes and fingers—orange; this reminds you to be warm and composed.
Warm: Tell yourself, “I won’t yell. I won’t yell. I won’t yell,” over and over again until the moment has passed.
Hot: Orange Rhino Favorite: Grab your children and hug them. Instead of creating a tug-of-war with my kids when we disagree, I start a hug-of-love; everyone calms down and refocuses, and what better reminder to yell less than to hug your kiddos?
