6 Expected Features on iPhone 15

25-04-2023 at 11:00:44 AM
The Apple iPhone 15 is going to be announced in September 2023. Let's see what features are expected to have on the iPhone 15. Read to learn more.

Although it is still a few months away from the launch, the iPhone 15 has received a lot of attention. Here are the features that are expected to appear on the new iPhone.

Apple has given us many of the features we have come to expect with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. These include an always-on display and better multitasking, thanks to Apple's Dynamic Island. But there are a few ways Apple could go further with the iPhone 15, especially for cheaper, non-Pro models.

Samsung regularly brings premium features down to cheaper phones over time, and users would like to see Apple take this approach more fully. It is also time for Apple's regular iPhones to get a boost. Apple usually announces its new iPhones in September and releases them shortly after. Here is what users hope to see from the iPhone 15 in this year.

Apple iPhone 15 USB-C Charging Port

The Lightning connector has been around for 10 years, and it is time for Apple to change. With so many Apple products moving to USB-C, the need for a single charger that powers all devices has never been greater. Apple currently has 4 different types of chargers on the market: Lightning (for iPhone, iPad 2021, AirPods, and some other accessories), USB-C (for most new iPads and MacBooks), MagSafe (non-magnetic charging cord for iPhone), and MagSafe 3 (magnetic charger for MacBook Air 2022, MacBook Pro 14-inch, and MacBook Pro 16-inch 2021).

Launching the Apple iPhone 15 USB-C charging port instead of Lightning means using the same cable to charge your new phones, new Macs, and iPads.

The good news is that the future of Apple iPhone 15 USB-C may not be far off. Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of global marketing, confirmed that the company would comply with the European Union's regulation that all phones sold in the region must have a USB-C charging port. He made the remarks during an interview at the Wall Street Journal Tech Live conference. Apple has also previously tested USB-C iPhones, according to Bloomberg.

However, Apple has not revealed any specific details about its plans. We do not know if Apple will start switching to USB-C with the iPhone 15 charging port or will wait until next year, as new rules require USB-C by the end of 2024. Apple has not said if either. USB-C will be used in all iPhone 15 charging port or just European models, though analysts expect Apple to switch to USB-C entirely.

Higher Refresh Rate on Regular iPhone 15 Models

Starting with last year's iPhone 13 Pro, Apple has added higher refresh rates to the displays on its high-end smartphones. The iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max have a feature Apple calls ProMotion, which can boost the display's refresh rate up to 120Hz, depending on what is being displayed. This results in more fluid scrolling and smoother animations.

It is a small change, but a change that makes the experience more pleasant. While a high refresh rate is not a common feature, it has become standard on most smartphones. For instance, Google's Pixel 7 has a 90Hz refresh rate, and Samsung's Galaxy S22 also has a 120Hz refresh rate. Even the Galaxy A53 5G has a 120Hz display, making its absence on the iPhone 14 even more noticeable.

However, it is likely that Apple will keep ProMotion exclusive to its high-end smartphones this year. Ross Young, a display industry analyst and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants tweeted in September that he did not expect to see the feature on the standard iPhone 15.

iPhone 15 Dynamic Island

iPhone 15 Dynamic Island is expected to be integrated into the new iPhone 15. Dynamic Island has indeed proven its worth, Apple is expected to do even more with it in the iPhone 15. It will be interesting to see Apple use this space to make proactive recommendations, such as apps that might be useful based on your activity, time of day, or schedule. Part of the usefulness of Dynamic Island also depends on what app developers decide to do with it.

For example, you can see currently playing music, timers, and directions in Maps at the top of the screen, eliminating the need to switch between apps. Dynamic Island makes multitasking easier on the iPhone 14 Pro, where Apple has traditionally lagged behind Samsung and other Android phones that support split-screen apps.

Smaller Notch on Regular iPhone 15

If Apple does not bring Dynamic Island to the base iPhone 15, hopefully, it will at least make the notch-less "intrusive" on the screen. The notch has not changed much since it debuted on the iPhone X in 2017, except for Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Meanwhile, other smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and OnePlus have found a way to offer edge-to-edge displays without cutting out a large notch for the front camera. Reducing the size of the notch will likely bring more screen space and a more modern look to the iPhone 15.

If Apple is indeed moving in this direction, we may have to wait until the iPhone 16 to see it. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with TF International Securities known for his predictions about Apple, estimates Face ID under the display and front-facing camera sensor will launch in 2024.

That said, there are good reasons why the iPhone still has a larger notch than many of its competitors. It mostly falls under Face ID, which is more complex than the facial recognition systems found on other phones like the Pixel 7, which Google warns against using to authenticate sensitive data like payment information. . However, if Bloomberg's usually accurate Mark Gurman is to be believed, Apple will bring Dynamic Island to all four new iPhone models in 2023.

Wireless Reverse Charging

Many Android phones feature wireless reverse charging, as the name implies. You can use the back of phones like the Galaxy S22 and Pixel 7 to charge other devices, such as smartwatches or earbuds. While it might not be a must-have for most people, I can imagine it useful for AirPods enthusiasts.

No one likes being stuck on their morning commute with a dead pair of AirPods. Adding a battery option by placing AirPods on the back of the phone for a few minutes could be a game changer Apple should consider. Of course, you must sacrifice some of your phone's battery. But if you are traveling to a destination where you can easily charge your phone once you arrive, such as the office, that trade-off might be worth it.

The Return of Touch ID

While Face ID is convenient in many cases, there are cases where using your finger to unlock your phone is more practical. That is why many people hope Touch ID will return on the iPhone. Maybe you have not had time to set up Face ID so it works with masks, or maybe you have not held your iPhone at the right angle for Face ID.

Apple clearly sees the value of fingerprint recognition, as the top button on the latest standard iPad and iPad Air has Touch ID. Doing the same with the iPhone 15 adds convenience, giving users the choice of Face ID or Touch ID, depending on the situation. Most Android phones come with a fingerprint reader and some form of facial recognition, so it is nice to see iPhone users have similar options.

It is unclear if Apple will ever return Touch ID to the iPhone. Although analyst Kuo previously predicted that future iPhones would have an in-display fingerprint sensor, he changed his opinion in March 2022. With rumors from Kuo, Apple may cancel the iPhone SE it had previously planned for 2024, and introducing a new iPhone with Touch ID could be more important than ever.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max solved many of the previous shortcomings of Apple smartphones. The updates we are hoping to see on the iPhone 15 may not seem revolutionary, but they will certainly make everyday tasks like charging and unlocking your phone a little easier.
